Freedom Riders

Eric is an accomplished journalist and photographer. He was an editor at several magazines including The Nation, Harper’s, 7 Days, Rolling Stone and the New York Observer.

Breach of Peace is a book about the 1961 Mississippi Freedom Riders, a photo-history told in images old and new. The book features new portraits of 80 Riders and the mug shots of all 328 Riders arrested in Jackson that year, along with excerpts of interviews with the featured Riders.

In the spring and summer of 1961, several hundred Americans – blacks and whites, men and women – entered Southern bus and train stations to challenge the segregated waiting rooms, lunch counters and bathrooms. The Supreme Court had ruled that such segregation was illegal, and the Riders were trying to force the federal government to enforce that decision.

CHICAGO —The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), today announced the five finalists for the inaugural William C. Morris Award, which honors a book written by a first-time author for young adults.
The finalists are:

• A Curse Dark as Gold by Elizabeth C. Bunce, published by Arthur A. Levine/Scholastic;
• Graceling by Kristin Cashore, published by Harcourt/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt;
• Absolute Brightness by James Lecesne, published by HarperTeen/Laura Geringer Books;
• Madapple by Christina Meldrum, published by Knopf, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books; and
• Me, the Missing, and the Dead by Jenny Valentine, published by HarperTeen

Students from local schools spend a day with Tapology Faculty taking workshops, participating in a historical lecture and attending a mini concert performance. These events are held at the Flint Public Library, Flint Institute of Music and the Sloan Museum. The two days of workshops went very well and here are a few pics from those days.
